Project Details

Axis was the principal contractor for a pub refurbishment at The Gipsy Moth. Situated in South East London, the landmark pub is the first in our new Leisure portfolio. The Grade I listed pub is within Maritime Greenwich, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our scope of works included an extensive programme of restorations, to the interior and exterior of the building.

Our team redecorated the front and side elevations of the building. With great attention to detail, we applied paint to the external masonry, the woodwork and the metalwork to match the existing colours. Prior to redecoration, we repaired and sanded down surfaces for a smooth, high-quality finish to the exterior walls.

As part of the pub refurbishment, our team also worked to improve the WC areas. We redecorated twelve cubicles within the facility, as well as the ceilings and walls. Our remit also extended to doors and frames, and replacing the concealed cisterns. We conducted minor electrical works as part of the work, providing and fitting lights in the Gentleman’s toilets.

We also ran a programme of refurbishments in the kitchen area. Our team repaired defects in walls, ceilings and floor tiles before fully redecorating the space. We remodelled the bar and dining area, using heritage restoration techniques. We used these techniques on the woodwork, timber flooring and columns, keeping in touch with the rustic aesthetics of the building.

Project Challenges

The location of the pub is within view of the famous Cutty Sark, so high numbers of tourists and pedestrians were close to the work area. To accommodate for this, we worked with full access scaffolding and deployed barriers to prevent public contact with the site. Our work was completed out-of-hours so the pub could remain fully operational and could continue custom during a busy summer period.
