M&E Director

Alan Noble

Alan has worked in the construction industry for 35 years. Like many senior Axis people, Alan started as an apprentice at the age of 16. He is in charge of the team responsible for M&E Responsive Repairs and Day to Day Repairs as well as gas works, lighting, boiler repairs and maintenance and EV charge point installation and compliance. He works across many major contracts at Axis.

From 2025, gas boilers using natural gas will not be allowed in new homes , and Alan is leading the way researching replacing gas boilers with air source heat pumps. He says:

“In everything we do, Compliance must be the pinnacle. Every resident’s boiler, in every home, must be compliant.”

Alan is also on the board of Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and serves as a judge on the awards panel of major trade publication Heating and Ventilation News.

FAQS

Can Axis help us to lower our building’s carbon emissions?2021-10-28T14:37:34+01:00

One of Axis’ core values is to protect the environment to protect our future. We strongly believe that each and every one of us has a collective responsibility to do our bit in reducing carbon emissions and opt for more sustainable practices.

This is something that we are continuing to develop and improve on across all of our services, including M&E. Axis is helping clients to introduce more sustainable energy sources and usage solutions within homes, offices and public spaces to prepare for a greener future.

So far, we have successfully installed EV charge stations for the Metropolitan Police and new energy-efficient modular boilers for The Crown Court Estate. We are also able to install Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP), which offer an alternative to gas boilers and water heating.

With ongoing planned and preventive maintenance, we focus on ensuring that installations are running as efficiently as possible, which is of course important for reducing energy consumption and subsequent costs.

What types of M&E compliance services do you provide?2021-10-28T14:33:42+01:00

For any public or private sector organisation, M&E compliance is a statutory requirement. It ensures that legislative and insurance regulations are being met, whilst mitigating risks surrounding health and safety within homes and workplaces.

There are a number of mechanical and electrical installations that require statutory compliance inspections. Here at Axis, we provide our clients with regular testing, inspections and compliance services. These includes:

  • Electrical safety compliance inspections
  • Fire safety compliance inspections
  • Gas safety compliance inspections
  • Air and ventilation safety compliance inspections
  • Drainage, plumbing and water hygiene compliance inspections

All of our engineers and inspectors have obtained the right level of training and qualifications to complete such work.

Which qualifications do Axis’ M&E engineers have?2021-10-28T14:27:42+01:00

Here at Axis, it is of utmost importance that our people have the right level of training and qualifications to complete work to a safe standard. Like all skilled professionals, our M&E engineers have undergone rigorous training before they can legally work.

Axis’ highly skilled operatives, engineers and managers are fully certified by industry bodies including Gas Safe, OFTEC, HETAS, MCS and NICEIC to carry out certified compliance testing and also rectification works. Their expertise is matched with leading-edge technology and the agility to mitigate risks as they find them.

Why hire an M&E contractor?2021-10-28T14:25:26+01:00

There are many benefits associated with partnering with a trusted M&E contractor, such as Axis.

Benefits include:

Building safety

Legislation surrounding M&E safety compliance is often complex and ever-changing. However, it’s essential that property owners are doing everything they can to abide by regulations to keep residents and occupants safe. One of the most significant benefits of hiring an M&E contractor is that we’ll take care of this for you.

From installation, maintenance and repair services, to compliance checks and scheduled testing, our team of qualified and experienced engineers are available around the clock to ensure that safety standards and required legislation are being met. This is so important to reduce any health, safety and fire risks associated with M&E systems.

Reducing downtime

Naturally, all M&E systems have some sort form of expected end-of-life date. This can be prompted by continual use, wear and tear, component breakdown or damage. An M&E contractor works to monitor the performance and maintenance of mechanical and electrical systems – spotting faults, wear and tear or errors that could be problematic in the future. This means that systems, or parts of systems, can be repaired or replaced before a breakdown occurs, helping to avoid any disruption to a property’s residents or occupants.

Efficiency

An M&E contractor will offer maintenance support services, which is essential for ensuring that systems are operating at maximum efficiency. Here at Axis, we help our clients to seek the most efficient and sustainable mechanical and electrical systems, that not only are more environmentally friendly but operate far more efficiently and at a lower cost.

What is an M&E contractor?2021-10-28T14:20:14+01:00

In facilities and property service management, an M&E contractor is a specialist organisation that manages the design, installation and maintenance of mechanical and electrical systems within a property.

Axis is an example of an M&E contractor. We have a broad team of experienced and qualified M&E engineers on hand to provide both planned maintenance as well as emergency repairs across a vast range of systems. We also work with clients to install new systems or upgrade their existing M&E installations.

As an M&E contractor, it’s our job to ensure that our client’s properties are operating as efficiently as possible whilst ensuring that M&E systems continue to function safely and effectively with minimum disruption to residents or property occupants. To do this, we provide a preventative maintenance service to uncover faults and potential breakdown issues. We also carry out emergency repairs and reactive responses to reduce system downtime and rectify issues as and when required.

We value our environment and focus on implementing the most sustainable practices throughout our services. As an experienced and innovative contractor, we’re helping our clients to seek out and install M&E systems that support efforts to reduce their overall energy consumption and carbon footprint, whilst preparing clients for future legislation changes surrounding emissions.

What does M&E stand for?2021-10-28T13:43:58+01:00

In the construction, property services and facilities management industry, ‘M&E’ stands for ‘mechanical and electrical’, or ‘mechanical and electrical systems’.

It’s often used interchangeably with the term ‘building services’. M&E systems, or building services, are assets, or installations within a property that serve a specific purpose, whether that be for functionality, safety, efficiency or comfort.

Whilst mechanical and electrical facilities are split into two types of systems, they often work in cooperation with one another, with many crossing over between system types. They both require specialist installation, servicing and maintenance, certification and compliance.
