Axis Volunteers Transform Garden Space for Families at Accommodation in Basildon

A Garden Transformation by Axis Volunteers has Created a Safe Space for Families at Dove Cott House

Throughout summer, Axis completed a garden transformation at Sanctuary’s Dove Cott House which brought safety, security and fun back to the community.

The rejuvenated outdoor space was once unusable, but now houses a safe area for families with a playground, soft furnishings, and toys.

Dove Cott House, located in Laindon, provides supported accommodation for single mothers aged 18-24 who are pregnant or have children. The facility encourages independent living and provides support to develop skills and improve self-confidence.

Through our social value commitments, we were able to provide 30 residents with young children a safe space to play, creating a sanctuary for both children and mothers alike.

Toni Evans, Deputy Local Services Manager, described the before and after, “There was a smoking area with old furniture in it, it was very unsafe for the children to be out here. Since the work has been carried out, it has become a safer place for the children to come and play.”

The project itself was funded jointly by Axis’ charity, the Axis Foundation and our supplier, Travis Perkins. It saw the clearance of the area and installation of playground equipment by Safeplay – as well as the installation and decorating of new fencing by Axis volunteers: Chris Houlihan, Darren Ship and David Rawlins.

Chris, Divisional Manager, spoke about the thought behind this project, “We are living up to our value of supporting the communities within which we work. It’s nice to leave with a playground for future generations to hopefully bring happiness to them.”

Toni expressed her gratitude, I would just like to say thank you to Axis on behalf of myself and all the residents here for making the garden a safer place for the children to play.”

This project stands as a reminder of Axis’ values and goals and shows Axis’ deep commitment to the community. Well done and thank you to all involved!
