DIY Workshop with Vulnerable Mothers in East London
Supporting the Magpie Project in Newham
On May 14th, a team of Axis volunteers led a DIY workshop with the Magpie Project (MP) for the benefit of vulnerable mothers in East London.
The Magpie Project supports women and children who are living in temporary or insecure accommodation in Newham and surrounding boroughs.
In the past, Axis have had the opportunity to support MP through our foundation – donating £5,000 in 2024 towards well-crafter play equipment and creative items to furnish a new play space for children.
We were pleased to be able to provide a workshop in May that would enhance the quality of life and accommodation for both the mothers and their children. This workshop developed DIY skills for women moving into their own housing.
Some of the skills developed included painting doors, learning to cut on different boards, learning how to use pollyfiller, how to use an electric screwdiver, and how to use an electric drill.
We were incredibly pleased to have these taught by 2 of our amazing apprentices, with Lauren demonstrating how different screws work for different wall types and Natalie teaching tips on how to get effective brushstrokes whilst painting.
Thank you to the team of Axis women who worked together to provide this workshop:
- Vera O’Driscoll, Social Value Manager
- Kate Thomson, Social Impact Coordinator
- Natalie Woodbine-Johnson, Apprentice Painter
- Lauren Karahan, Apprentice Plumber
(with special recognition to David Leonard, Apprentice Mentor for his enthusiasm and assistance with its organisation).
The mothers in attendance were also provided with DIY goodie bags from Axis. The waterproof tote bags included: a mini spirit level, screws, hammer, portable measuring tape, small paint rollers and a tray, a set of paintbrushes, a screwdriver, and leaflets on keeping the home warm and mould-free. The bags were well received and helped extend the impact of the workshop beyond the day itself.
About the day, Kate added ‘This workshop was such a success and it fills me with joy to know what we have provided these mothers the autonomy and skill set to be able to improve their homes when they move out of temporary accommodation.
Natalie and Lauren were amazing at leading demonstrations and creating an atmosphere where the mums felt confident to give it a go themselves. Workshops like this really showcase how we positively impact the local community and I hope the mums enjoyed it as much as I did!’
