I am proud to contribute to projects that improve healthcare facilities. Hospital projects have a direct impact on patient care and staff working conditions which gives the work real purpose.

Experience

How would you describe your experience at the company since you started?

My experience has been demanding but rewarding in high pressure environments. Working on hospital projects has exposed me to strict compliance requirements, programme pressures and stakeholder coordination.

How have you grown personally and professionally during your apprenticeship?

I joined with no prior experience in quantity surveying or construction, so everything I know has been developed through hands-on exposure and structured learning within the company. Professionally I have built my understanding from the ground up starting with the basics and building into the more complex aspects of construction. Personally, I have grown in confidence and resilience. Starting without experience meant I had to ask questions, accept feedback and learn quickly. I have become more independent, more organised and more comfortable contributing in meetings. My communication skills have improved significantly – I have moved from mainly observing discussions to actively contributing

How do you balance hands-on work with classroom learning, and how has that supported your development?

I actively link my studies to the projects I work on. For example, when studying contract law or measurement, I apply that knowledge to valuations, variations and subcontractor packages. The technical learning strengthens my commercial judgement, and the workplace reinforces the theory.

Support & Development

Are there any mentors / team members who have supported you along the way? How have they supported you?

Andrew Young (Building Surveyor). He developed my understanding of technical and design details within projects, and how these impact cost, buildability and programme. Improving my communication and people skills when working with site teams, subcontractors and project stakeholders.

What skills are you most excited to continue developing during your apprenticeship?

I want to continue developing my people skills, particularly when working with site teams, subcontractors and key stakeholders. I am focused on improving my communication, including leading discussions, managing expectations and handling difficult conversations professionally. I want to strengthen my understanding of construction contracts, especially contractual obligations, change control and risk allocation. I am also keen to improve my ability to identify and manage risk early, particularly on complex projects.

Do you feel there is a clear path for progression within the company? If so, what does that look like for you?

Yes, since joining Axis CLC, there is now the opportunity to work across the wider group in the future, gaining exposure to different sectors, teams and projects as I progress.

Culture & Benefits

How would you describe the company culture in three words?

Collaborative, supportive, accountable.

What makes you proud to work here?

I am proud to contribute to projects that improve healthcare facilities. Hospital projects have a direct impact on patient care and staff working conditions which gives the work real purpose.

What do you think the biggest benefit of being an apprentice is with us?

The opportunity to gain real world experience while working towards a recognised degree.

Looking Ahead

What are your career aspirations, and how is the company helping you work towards them?

My goal is to become a Chartered Quantity Surveyor and take on greater commercial responsibility across a range of projects, while taking a particular focus on complex healthcare projects.

What advice would you give someone considering an apprenticeship with us?

Be prepared to take responsibility early and step outside your comfort zone. Ask questions, seek feedback and take ownership of your development. If you are proactive and willing to learn, you will gain valuable experience quickly.
