Lessons from a First-Year Apprentice!

Introduction

Lauren Karahan is a dedicated first year Plumbing Apprentice at Axis, currently embarking on a three-year apprenticeship journey.

How have you been finding your first year as a Plumbing Apprentice at Axis?

I find my apprenticeship very interesting as I’m always learning something new every day!

What inspired you to pursue a career in plumbing?

My plumbing career started when I completed my level 1 apprenticeship, and because I enjoyed it so much, I decided to progress into my level 2 to further my education.

What were your initial expectations when you started the apprenticeship, and how have they compared to reality?

The apprenticeship expectations differ between college and work. For example, in college you have everything set up to do the work, while at work it’s been a learning curve with unexpected situations.

What new skills have you learnt since starting your apprenticeship?

I have developed the ability to accurately identify various faults within boilers and heating systems, enhancing my diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.

How do you feel your knowledge has grown so far?

I’m always learning something new every day, so my knowledge is expanding.

Are there any skills or lessons from college that you’ve found particularly useful in your day-to-day work?

I feel that in college, we learn tricks of the trade particularly when you work together with other apprentices and share your own experiences and what you’ve learnt on the job.

How would you describe the team and the support you’ve received at Axis?

The Axis team have treated me well, and since the first day, they have been very supportive and helpful. We are a little Axis family.

Are there any mentors or team members who have had a significant impact on your learning?

I feel that everyone has helped play a part in my learning by making sure I have the right tools and equipment for the job as well as providing additional training to get me where I need to be.

How has this apprenticeship influenced your confidence in the trade?

The Axis apprenticeship has made given me more confidence in my aspects of my role, for example I’m more confident communicating with tenants by explaining the works, additionally making general conversation to help them feel comfortable.

What skills are you looking forward to developing as you continue your apprenticeship?

I’m looking forward to becoming a better engineer as I continue to develop my skills and experiences.

What’s the best part of your apprenticeship experience so far?

The best part of my apprenticeship is the people you meet and communicate with. From my mentors to the other engineers. I also love that I can earn and learn during this apprenticeship.

What advice would you give to someone just starting their first year as a Plumbing Apprentice at Axis?

My advice would be, don’t be afraid to make any mistakes because when you’re an apprentice you’re bound to make some. Don’t be afraid to ask any questions as this will help you progress within your apprenticeship.
