Leaside Kindergarten, a nurturing space for children aged 2 ½ to 5 years old, underwent a transformation that enriched learning and play experiences. Put forward by Catherine Neary, our Gas Engineer, this initiative aimed to convert the existing garden area into an engaging outdoor classroom, fostering exploration and discovery for both children and educators alike.

This initiative was undertaken in partnership with Travis Perkins, who generously provided the funding for procuring essential materials and facilitated caged van hire for streamlined waste disposal.

The project, which was scheduled for the week commencing August 14th, garnered significant support from Axis. The project’s execution was overseen by Michael Martino, Contract Manager, and David Leonard, Apprentice Mentor with volunteer support from Jordan Wilson-Ozdemir, George Cliff, Tyler Gibbs, Jocelyn Tritton, Joel Wynter, and James Hedges.

Leaside Kindergarten plays a pivotal role in Ware, Hertfordshire providing a safe and stimulating environment for young learners. Operated by a management committee comprised of parents, friends, and staff, the kindergarten ensured the highest standards of care and education.

The team embarked on a transformative three-day mission. They cleared hazardous undergrowth, revitalized flowerbeds, dismantled a pergola, built up protective fences, repaired and painted a playhouse, and crafted a mud kitchen. Their dedication not only ensured safety but also sparked creativity. The kindergarten staff are elated with the results, a testament to the volunteers’ impactful contribution.

David Leonard, our Apprentice Mentor, expressed his deep appreciation to the apprentices, ‘I cannot tell you how impressed I am with you all. The way you worked together, bonded, bantered and got on with the job in hand was inspirational.  I know the trustees of the kindergarten will be so pleased with the finished product the photos (of me) look brilliant.  It shows a good commitment to the communities we live in. Thanks again well done.’

Michael Martino, Contract Manager also expressed his gratitude and said, ‘I would like to say a big thank you and well done all, as myself and Lauren from the Kindergarten were both impressed how you guys work together as a team and provide a fantastic end product.’

By evolving the outdoor area into an educational space, the kindergarten aims to foster children’s understanding of the natural world, teaching them about plant growth, the shifting seasons, and the wonders of nature. The new outdoor classroom provides an immersive setting for exploration, encouraging hands-on engagement and curiosity-driven learning.
