Fast Track Gas Apprenticeship!
INTRODUCTION:
Fletcher Walsh is the first gas apprentice to complete the Axis Fast Track Gas Apprenticeship Programme. Throughout this fast-tracked two-year programme (traditionally four years) with Gas and Environmental Services Ltd (GES), he gained hands-on experience, earned a valuable qualification, and established a strong career foundation.
Find out why he recommends this fast tracked programme!
How does it feel to be the very first person to complete the Axis Fast Track Gas Apprenticeship?
It feels great to be the first to complete the Axis Fast Track Gas Apprenticeship. I’ve put a lot of effort into learning and developing my skills, so reaching this point is something I’m really proud of. Hopefully, it shows what’s possible for future apprentices coming through the programme.
What first attracted you to join Axis and apply for the apprenticeship scheme?
What first attracted me to Axis was how they support apprentices and give you real experience out in the field. I liked the idea of learning on the job and being part of a company that invests in your development from the start.
The fast-track programme condenses 4 years into just two. How did you find the pace and intensity of the course?
It was definitely a step up in pace, especially compared to a normal apprenticeship, but I saw it as a great opportunity. It forced me to stay disciplined and make the most of every day. With the right mindset and support, it was achievable — and really rewarding in the end.
The programme is designed to give apprentices productivity from day 1. Did you feel prepared and confident going into live projects?
I felt well prepared because the programme gives you solid training before you go out on live jobs, and there’s always support from the engineers around you. You’re encouraged to get involved straight away, which really helps build confidence and experience early on.
What was the overall experience like?
It was honestly one of the best experiences I’ve had. It wasn’t easy, but I’ve come out of it with a qualification, loads of hands-on experience, and a clear career path ahead of me. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who’s serious about getting into the gas trade.
What skills or knowledge do you feel most proud of gaining?
I’m proud of building up both the technical skills and the confidence to apply them in real jobs. The programme really taught me how to think like an engineer, not just follow instructions.
How important was the support from Axis mentors or your peers?
The support from Axis mentors and my peers was a huge part of my success. Having experienced engineers around to guide me made a massive difference, especially during the tougher parts of the course. They were always willing to share their knowledge and make sure I understood not just what to do, but why it’s done that way.
Can you share a memorable moment of your apprenticeship journey?
One of the most memorable moments was the first time the engineer I was working with, stood back and let me complete a full boiler service without him having to tell me what I had to do. This moment made me realise how much I had learnt and it was great to crack on confidently.
Axis created this scheme. How do you feel this training has set you up for your career?
The scheme has given me a really solid foundation for my career. I’ve not only gained the qualifications but also the practical skills and mindset to succeed. I’m grateful to Axis for creating a programme that’s allowed me to move forward so quickly.
Do you have any advice to new apprentices who are interested in joining the Axis Fast Track Gas Apprenticeship programme?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help and get involved from day one. The programme gives you the chance to learn from really experienced engineers, and taking every opportunity to get hands-on will make all the difference.
Do you have any ambitions or goals now that you’ve completed the programme?
My goal now is to keep developing my skills as you never stop learning when you’re a gas engineer. And I’d also like to expand my skills for different fuel types and pick up more knowledge.
We’re incredibly proud of Fletcher for becoming the first person to complete our fast-track gas apprenticeship. His achievement is a milestone not only for him, but also for Axis as we continue to pioneer training that equips apprentices with the skills and confidence, they need from day one. Fletcher’s success is proof that this new approach works, and we’re excited to see more apprentices follow in his footsteps
It is my great pleasure to inform you and your team that Fletcher has sat his first ACS at my centre and has passed. In a few weeks he will be geting his certificate and cards from LCL Awards. Once received, he can apply to be on the Gassafe Register. Well done Fletcher, your journey as a registered gas engineer is about to start.
It has been a pleasure having Fletcher at the centre and he shows a lot of potential and understanding of this industry. We all at WGC wish him well and look forward to adding to his qualifications in twelve months.
