Supporting the Royal British Legion: Volunteering for the Poppy Appeal 2024

Remembrance Day Volunteering

Across October and November in the lead up to Remembrance Day, a team of Axis employees used their volunteering days to support the Royal British Legion (RBL)’s annual Poppy Appeal.

The RBL is a charity at the heart of the national network that supports the Armed Forces community. Established in 1921, the RBL is the UK’s largest Armed Forces charity with 180,000 members and 110,000 volunteers.

The charity’s support starts one day after service finishes and continues throughout life, long after service has finished. From providing expert advice and guidance to aiding recovery and rehabilitation, as well as the transition to civilian life, the RBL is a huge support to members of the Armed Forces and their families.

The Poppy Appeal is the RBL’s biggest fundraising campaign, held every year in November (during the period of Remembrance). Wearing a red poppy directly benefits the Armed Forces community by contributing to the RBL and shows support for the community across the UK.

Volunteers from Axis joined train stations across London and the South East including Canary Wharf, Charing Cross and New Eltham to sell poppies and raise vital funds.

Laurence Austin, Site Manager volunteered at New Eltham and said, “I loved it! We raised over £1000! I chose to help with the RBL as it’s something I feel strongly about. I enjoyed talking to different people and hearing stories of older relatives, I would recommend it to anyone”.

Tony Mantle, Operations Director joined a team at Canary Wharf station. He added, “It was a pleasure to participate in the poppy appeal again this year. I was stationed from 6am-7pm! It was a long day but the generosity of the public never fails to amaze me”.
