Project Details

Axis’ award-winning, specialist Heritage team conducted a period property renovations programme for Peabody. Our works took place at Peabody’s historically-important Southwark Street Estate in London.

Peabody built Southwark Street in their early days of pioneering social housing, completing it in 1876. Originally featuring 12 blocks of flats, Southwark Street Estate now comprises nine blocks. These are still home to Peabody residents.

Our period property renovations programme comprised external and internal repairs and redecoration to this Victorian heritage property.

We conducted external works meticulously with masonry repairs to all the facades of all nine Victorian blocks within the estate and then employed the specialist DOFF cleaning system. We washed down all windows and repaired guttering and downpipes and rainwater goods. Our specialist painting team then undertook the external redecorations. To finish off our external works, we refurbished all the sheds on the estate.

The internal programme of works comprised the full redecoration of indoor communal areas, including walls, ceilings, doors and railings. Axis adhered to the period-appropriate colour preferences expressed by our client.

Whilst conducting this major period property renovations programme to the fully occupied blocks, we tailored the schedule of works to the convenience of Peabody’s 156 residents. For example, we consulted with them well in advance to let them know our internal painting schedules and altered them to minimise disruption.

Axis’ Heritage team has been entrusted to conduct period restoration works to many buildings of cultural and historic significance. These include Grade I and Grade II listed buildings and scheduled Ancient Monuments. Our portfolio includes the Banqueting Hall at one of London’s oldest Guilds, The Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers and The Great Hall at Royal Hospital Chelsea as well as Lincoln’s Inn and Gray’s Inn.
