Axis unveils refurbished community pitch at Lewis Place

We recently celebrated the reopening of a community football pitch at Lewis Place in Hackney, which we refurbished in partnership with Southern Housing, with whom we are conducting ongoing improvement works at the estate.

This community pitch had previously been used for sessions ranging from league team trainings and youth football to activity sessions for elderly individuals and those with disabilities. However, recently, the pitch has fallen into disrepair. Potholes and overgrown bushes had made the pitch hazardous, forcing these programmes to move elsewhere.

To restore the value of this crucial community space, refurbishment works were required. Over the past month, we partnered with Southern Housing to renovate the pitch, undertaking a range of improvement works, including:

  • Installing brand-new astro-turf
  • Upgrading the lighting
  • Setting up new netting and pitch borders
  • Installing new Goals
  • Full restoration to ensure the pitch is safe, durable, and community-ready

Brian Akintokun, Community Director for Grassroots for Good charity and Hackney Wick FC, who are key users of the pitch, commented on the renovations, saying:

"We're delighted to see the work that's been done to get the pitch back into community use, as this will be used for some of our community engagement activities to provide safe recreational play to members of the wider Hackney Community. We'd like to thank both Southern Homes and Axis for their work and dedication to grassroots community football and sports"

We are proud to partner with Southern Housing to support Hackney Wick FC and the wider local community to provide a safe space for residents to train, compete, stay active and connect. We are excited to see the pitch in full use over the coming months!
