New programme for Heritage building in London
Axis commenced a new External Redecoration and Repairs programme at the Carlton House Terrace in London for The Crown Estate in February 2022. Works will last until November 2022 and the project is valued at £2.6m.
Scope of Works
Specifically our team is working on 2-9 Carlton House Terrace (East Terrace), and 10-18 Carlton House Terrace (West Terrace) and 1-3 Carlton Gardens. The Crown Estate whose HQ was, for many years, situated at Numbers 13–16, owns these properties.
- Cleaning and repairing external walls before repainting
- Repairing and painting all windows and doors
- Cleaning down all hard standing and steps
- All roof repairs including balconies/pediments/canopies
- Repairing, preparing and painting all previously painted metalwork surfaces
- All surfaces are to be painted and varnished with Crown Estates-approved products to carefully match existing colours and materials
Previous works for the Crown Estate
We have conducted many works for the Crown Estate including an office reinstatement works programme at Piccadilly Circus; an external works programme at the home of UK consumer choice company Which? and an extensive window and facade renovation project at Regent’s University in London.

Heritage buildings, 2-9 and 10-18 Carlton House Terrace, are two four storey-plus blocks of grand terraced townhouses on the south side of Carlton House Terrace in the St James’s district of Westminster. Built to designs by John Nash, the townhouses overlook St James Park. Numbers 10 to 18 (including the Institute Of Contemporary Arts) and railings to north and west are Grade I Listed.
Residents past and present
Businesses, institutes and societies including Royal Academy of Engineering, the Institute Of Contemporary Arts (ICA), the Turf Club and the Royal Society are the current occupants. Carlton House Terrace is also home to the British Academy – you may have seen this Grade 1 listed building on your screens: it is often used as a film location and has starred in Sherlock and The Crown.
A Who’s Who of former residents of Carlton House Terrace includes: Lord Cardigan, Leader of the Charge of the Light Brigade; Lord Palmerston, Prime Minister, and Joachim von Ribbentrop, German Ambassador.
