The Royal Parks

Axis’ Heritage team completes 6-month £220,000 Grade II listed refurbishment project at St Mary’s Lodge for The Royal Parks

Project Details

St Mary’s Lodge is situated in the north west corner of Greenwich Park and houses a café.

It was built in 1807-8 for the park under-keeper to designs by British architect John Nash. Nash’s best-known designs are the Royal Pavilion in Brighton; and Marble Arch and Buckingham Palace in London.

As such, St Mary’s Lodge is a landmark heritage building. And our client, The Royal Parks, entrusted our Heritage team conduct a Grade II listed refurbishment programme here.

Works included removing the roof covering and repairing the timber underneath. We supplied and installed a new breather membrane covering. Reinstating the roof, our team was happy to use some of the old and reclaimed slates to keep the building’s authenticity.

As part of our Grade II listed refurbishment project, we also completed general repairs to the external fabric including repairs to render, leadwork, chimney, timber window and door sets. We then redecorated the exterior of the building.

Internally, we removed and replaced the ceilings and conducted all re-plastering works.

Benefits

  • Future proofing precious heritage building
  • Improved aesthetic appeal
  • Enhanced thermal performance
  • Watertight roofing
  • Continued practical use of historic building
  • Reduced repair and maintenance costs for TRP
