Recently, we partnered with a local boys’ school in Woolwich to welcome 6 students for a week of work experience at our Stratford office in partnership with our client, Peabody.

Students spent two days learning hands-on with one of our teams, with students placed with our Quantity Surveying and Finance, Scheduling, Customer Service and Complaints, Multitrade Operatives and Supervisor teams according to their preferences. These placements gave them a taste of the day-to-day life in the department and the chance to learn through hands-on experience.

The remaining days, we conducted a number of sessions to equip students with employability skills and expand their knowledge of the industry, including:

  • A Hidden Careers in Construction session
  • DIY Workshop & Apprenticeship Q&A
  • Employability Session including CV building
  • Creation of a presentation about what they had learnt that week, which they presented to their peers

Our Axis CLC Apprentices supported with the Hidden Careers in Construction and DIY Workshop & Apprentice Q&A Session. This gave them the chance to reflect on their journeys so far and use the skills they have acquired to inspire the next generation. Having first hand information from our apprentices was also invaluable for the students to understand what an apprenticeship entails.

We were able to give the students a taste of work in the industry and equip them with invaluable employability skills to support them as they progress in their education and employment journeys. At Axis CLC, investing in our people and the local community is one of our key values, and we hope that this week has equipped these young students with the skills and confidence they need to pursue any career avenue they choose.

This pilot was all about creating a well-rounded and engaging work experience for young people, where exposure to multiple careers and skill-developing activities were a core focus. This week was a great success, and the students showed a high level of inquisitiveness and eagerness to learn. I look forward to improving this programme for next time, and ensuring Axis CLC have a defined work experience programme that will benefit students and provide valuable experiences.
