Project Details
Axis was commissioned for a Grade II listed building restoration project at the iconic Covent Garden market in central London. Our Heritage division took on the task of repairing and redecorating the North and South Market Halls. The project was successfully delivered on behalf of CAPCO (Capital & Counties CG Limited) and took place over 9 weeks.
Our team completed a scope of works that comprised of restoring the (high level) cast ironwork and the glazing. This enhanced the aesthetic finish and protected and preserved important components of the building. We took on the repairs and cleaning all of the glassworks, as well as undertaking all painting and decorating. The team carried out brickwork and the stone repairs alongside the leadwork.
Project Challenges
We faced a few challenges within the remit of this listed building restoration project. One of these challenges was the height and shape of the building structure. Our heritage team utilised cherry pickers to enable our access to the apex of the arches, the glasswork and other hard to reach places.
We also carried out works outside of normal hours. This ensured that the popular tourist destination could function normally during the day. It also allowed all retailers housed within the property to remain open for business. Our heritage team ran the works in both the North and South Halls concurrently. This meant we could compress the project into a two-month window.
