Hosting Local Students for Pathways to Potential Work Experience Programme
From the 30th of June to the 3rd of July, 14 students from across London were welcomed to our Stratford branch for our brand-new, week-long Pathways to Potential work experience programme.
Through collaboration with our clients Peabody, L&Q, RB Greenwich and LB Hackney, as well as our links with local schools and colleges, we identified motivated students who engaged enthusiastically in the programme. The programme provided them with an invaluable introduction to careers skills, teamwork and roles in the industry.
Over the course of the week, students attended a range of workshops and seminars to gain essential skills, knowledge and a taste of life in the industry, including:
- Apprenticeship Talk and Q&A
- Careers Carousel
- Try DIY Workshop
- Introduction to Social Value
- Employability Skills and Interview Advice Session
- CV Building Workshop
- Insight into components of a site team and life as a Quantity Surveyor
- Collaborative team building challenges
Students also worked in small groups on a project to reimagine a run-down community centre. They used their knowledge from sessions throughout the week to create an in-depth design proposal to pitch their vision for the centre. This culminated in an 8-minute professional pitch presented to their peers at the end of the week. Attendees were able to apply what they had learnt about budgeting, project management and social value to create a persuasive pitch.
Following the week, 85% of attendees said that the week had helped them understand what they needed to do to prepare for the world of work. We are proud to support local students taking their first step into the world of work. Programmes such as these equip young people with knowledge and experience to support them as they pursue long-term careers.
We look forward to recreating and expanding this programme to help more students gain an understanding of the careers available in this sector and the skills required to pursue them.
