Axis Celebrates 100th Air Source Heat Pump Installation as Low-Carbon Housing Delivery Gathers Pace

Axis has reached a major milestone in its decarbonisation journey, completing its 100th air source heat pump (ASHP) installation across its housing contracts. The achievement marks another step forward in supporting the UK’s transition to low-carbon social housing.

The landmark installation took place at an Eastlight Community Homes property on Braeburn Road in Colchester, where a new ASHP system replaced an 18-year-old conventional oil boiler. The upgrade reduces carbon emissions, improves efficiency, and provides a more consistent source of heat and hot water for residents.

Supporting the Shift to Net Zero Housing

As the UK moves towards its net zero targets, housing associations are under increasing pressure to decarbonise existing homes. Many properties still rely on gas or oil heating, making air source heat pumps a key solution.

The Colchester installation operates at an efficiency of 4.0, meaning it produces around four units of heat for every one unit of electricity consumed. This is significantly higher than typical ASHP seasonal efficiencies of 2.5–3.5 and far surpasses the 70–85% efficiency of the replaced oil boiler. The system also captures nearly 972 kWh of renewable energy, helping cut carbon emissions by up to 85% compared with conventional oil heating.

Axis’s decarbonisation service supports clients with a full end-to-end approach. This includes assessment, design, installation, and ongoing monitoring of low-carbon technologies such as heat pumps and solar PV. Advanced monitoring ensures systems operate efficiently while providing residents with reliable heating and hot water.

Delivering Real Benefits for Residents

The resident at the Eastlight property has already experienced consistent and stable heating throughout the home. Hot water is now reliable, indoor comfort is improved, and energy use is lower during warmer months thanks to the system’s efficient low-temperature design.

Smart system controls and live monitoring mean performance can be tracked in real time, ensuring ongoing efficiency and identifying opportunities for optimisation over the system’s lifespan.

Strengthening Partnerships in the Sector

The milestone reflects Axis’s growing role in helping housing providers decarbonise their properties. Eastlight Homes continues to replace older heating systems across its portfolio, supporting carbon reduction targets while improving comfort and energy efficiency for residents.

Building for the Future

Reaching 100 installations is an important step in Axis’s continued investment in renewable heating technologies and progress towards MCS accreditation.

The company is also expanding capabilities across ground source heat pumps and larger-scale systems, ensuring it can meet the evolving needs of social housing providers and deliver low-carbon heating solutions at scale.

A Trusted Decarbonisation Partner

With increasing demand for retrofit across the social housing sector, experienced delivery partners are essential.

Axis combines technical expertise with practical delivery experience, helping housing providers transition to low-carbon homes efficiently and reliably. The 100th ASHP installation demonstrates Axis’s commitment to improving resident comfort, reducing carbon emissions, and shaping a sustainable future for UK housing.
