New NHS Refurbishment Contract at Fern Ward

Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust (KMPT) awarded Axis an NHS contract to refurbish Fern Ward, a high dependency psychiatric facility at St Martin’s Hospital in Canterbury, Kent. Fern Ward is an 18-bed inpatient unit caring for women.

Our new 26-week NHS contract started in August 2022 and is scheduled to end in March 2023, and is valued at £1m.

Scope of Works includes:

  • Full Strip Out
  • New Access Control Security and Nurse call installations
  • New Kitchen, food prep area and tea point
  • New Bathrooms/Showers/WCs including all anti ligature ancillaries
  • New Security Doors throughout
  • FRA works
  • M&E Installations including new Lighting
  • New DDA access ramps for wheelchairs and patient patio areas
  • Tree removal and landscaping including installing low maintenance artificial grass
  • Plastering and Painting and Decorating

In detail:

Showers and Bathrooms and WCs

  • Strip Out existing sanitaryware, controls, IPS units, flooring
  • Level flooring
  • Supply and install new solid surface shower trays, showerheads, temperature blending valves
  • Supply and install Trovex Hygipod Anti-Ligature IPS system, shower heads with automatic controls
  • New Anti-Ligature Security Doors
  • Supply and install Altro White rock Hygienic PVCu  wall cladding system at full height
  • Install new nonslip vinyl sheet safety flooring
  • Decorate ceilings with Dulux Mould Resisting Diamond Eggshell in white
  • Plaster repairs and redecorating to all ceilings, walls, and timberwork

Doors

  • Remove existing doors and frames
  • Supply and install Anti-Ligature security door sets

Kitchen and Kitchenette (Tea Point)

  • Strip out existing flooring, floor and wall-mounted kitchen cupboard units, worktops, sinks etc…
  • Supply and fit new bespoke wall and floor mounted kitchen units/cupboards and worktops etc…
  • Install new nonslip vinyl sheet safety flooring
  • Install PVCu cladding to half height to walls where kitchen units do not cover

Day Room and Activity Rooms

  • Strip out skirtings and flooring
  • Plaster repairs and redecorating to all ceilings, walls, and timberwork
  • Remove and dispose from site existing sliding partition
  • Construct new internal partition wall including decorations
  • Alter Power and Data to suit new rooms
  • Install vinyl sheet safety flooring and rubber skirtings to newly created separate rooms

Exterior

  • Clear garden area including tree removal and old paved areas
  • Remove all garden items, plants, prior to works and set aside for reinstatement on completion
  • Level off existing ground, supply crushed granite stone – thoroughly compact and leave level
  • Supply and fit artificial grass to entire courtyard area
  • Drainage Repairs include descaling and repairing defects.
  • Construct  external Patio terrace and DDA compliant access ramp

FRA works

  • Installation of Intumescent foam-Intumescent / fire resistant silicone/ gap sealers -Intumescent Collars, Wraps & Bandages-Block & Plug Systems-Fire Stop sleeves  and Fire Stop Cushions

Challenges

Mindful of the vulnerability of the occupants of Fern Ward we will be phasing our works, respecting the patient needs including their protected mealtimes, activities and learning sessions whilst ensuring all our works, site team, products and methods are in accordance with NHS guidelines and Infection Control measures.
