Fire Safety FAQs

What sort of fire stopping works does Axis conduct?

Axis’ Fire Risk Management Division has completed and is actively progressing various Fire Risk Assessment (FRA) programmes for many of our clients. Our operations range from initial risk assessment and reporting to remedial and renewal installation works.

These include:

  • Compartmentation
  • Design and installation of fire detection systems and emergency lighting works
  • Front doors provided in FD30s and FD60s to include secure-by-design
  • Installation of fire batts, fire collars, and fire pillows and all forms of penetration sealings
  • Installation of fire curtains and ‘Firetherm Intudeck’ systems within loft spaces
  • Manufacture and installation of new third party accredited fire-rated communal and front entrance door sets. Test evidence provided including burn tests to both sides of the doors
  • Passive and Active Fire Stopping systems
  • Upgrade and repairs to existing certified door-sets

All product manufacture is covered by third party accreditations; FIRAS, BM Trada, IFC. All installers are third party accredited to either FIRAS, BM Trada or IFC.

What are active fire stopping solutions?

Active fire solutions act to either detect, extinguish or aid in escaping a fire. Manual or automatic activation systems include AFD (Automated Fire Detection), AOV (Automatic Opening Vents), emergency lighting, fire detection systems, smoke alarms, sprinkler systems and wayfinding signage.

What are passive fire stopping solutions?

Passive fire solutions help contain the fire by delaying the spread of fire and smoke. They include installation of cavity barriers, fire batts, pillows, sleeves, curtains, collars and wraps, firestops and penetration seals and Firetherm Intudeck systems in lofts.

Do active and passive fire stopping solutions work together?

Yes. Both active and passive fire protection solutions play important and complementary roles as part of a building’s fire strategy.

What is compartmentation in fire safety?

Compartmentation simply divides a building into ‘compartments’ to effectively contain and suppress fire. Each compartment is then reinforced with fire-resistant materials and through the installation of protective measures such as fire doors or cavity barriers.

How do sprinklers work?

Sprinklers react to heat. If fitted, they will spray water across a room that has reached 60-70 degrees.
The London Fire Brigade recommends their use in schools, care homes where are mobility may be an issue, residential properties over 11m and hotels, B&Bs and hostels.

Who conducts Axis’ fire stopping works?

As members of all relevant compliance and regulatory bodies, and with over 20 years’ experience, our Fire Risk Assessment Management team are experts in fire legislation and compliance and have relevant qualifications and training.

Fire risk assessment works should be carried out by experienced and certified experts like those at Axis. Our professionals have the necessary knowledge and qualifications to assess fire risks, identify appropriate fire-stopping solutions, and ensure works are carried out to a high quality and compliant standard.

Can fire-stopping measures be retrofitted?

Yes, fire-stopping works can be retrofitted in existing buildings that do not meet current fire safety standards. Retrofitting involves assessing the building’s fire risks, identifying deficient areas, and implementing appropriate fire-stopping measures to enhance the overall fire protection of the structure.
