Axis was commissioned by the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime to deliver external refurbishments and this roof renewal project at Great Scotland Yard in Whitehall, Central London. This is the home of their Central London Mounted Division.

Project Details

Throughout the past six years, our public sector team have successfully delivered various projects on the Metropolitan Police Estate, to over 64 of their 200 plus premises in and around London. These include some of their high-security covert locations and all within a live operational environment.

Our team used natural Welsh and Lead slate to complete this roof replacement, we used those materials, in particular, to fit in with this listed heritage building’s aesthetic. Next, we introduced the conservation roof light installation alongside a programme of careful, non-abrasive façade cleaning. The team also provided redecorations with modern-day environmentally friendly paints, fitting with the Met’s sustainability policies.

Our conservation specialists took on a host of stone and masonry repairs, along with the removal and repair of the ornate railings. We used sympathetic methods in keeping with the age and listing of this building, with approved reclaimed materials to maintain the historic importance of the building.

Our final work within this roof renewal project involved an upgrade for the windows. We improved the secondary double glazing since the timber sash windows were to be retained as these are protected under the listing of the building. Our team used an intricate scaffolding design to ensure that our work did not compromise the daily operations held within the building. They also allowed for non-obtrusive access to the site for our team.
