Axis was contracted by the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers to provide building restoration services at their Banqueting Hall.

Axis’ award-winning Heritage team restored the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers Banqueting Hall.

Project Details

Axis was contracted by the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers to conduct building restoration services for the internal decoration of their Banqueting Hall. Our Heritage Division won the coveted Premier Trophy (in the Highly Decorative category), awarded by the Painting and Decorating Association (PDA). The judges noted: “The shields that were re-gilded were a fine example of the craft. A great finish to the work to produce a very bright environment for hosting functions.”

Our team took on the scope of works, which included the lining and redecoration of walls and ceilings. We also redecorated the windows and dados, as well as restoring the oak panels and doors. We refurbished the silver display cabinet alongside Mechanical and Electrical work, such as the installation of LED lighting for pictures, domes and downlighters.

Our team also completed a substantial amount of gold leaf work throughout the Banqueting Hall. The hall was completely re-gilded under the direction of our Master Gilder, who is also a member of the Painter-Stainers’ Company, to achieve the period-accurate finish.

The Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers

One of the oldest Guilds in the City of London, the “Paynters” Guild can trace its existence back to 1283. Members of the Guild decorated, gilded and coloured solid objects such as wood, metal and stone. They also painted everything from portraits, carriages, barges, murals and the interior of buildings, particularly churches. In 1502 they joined forces with the “Steyners” Guild whose members produced decorative designs for pageants, processions, funerals and other ceremonies. They created flags, streamers, banners and imitations of tapestries.

In 1532 they acquired premises in Little Trinity Lane. These premises, now called Painters’ Hall, have remained their home ever since. The current building is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and in daily use as a banqueting and conference centre. We have previously been contracted by the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers for an external building restoration services project. It included renovation works to the roof, railings, guttering, downpipes and cleaning the full building façade.
